Crossbite

Crossbite is a malocclusion in which the upper teeth do not properly overlap the lower teeth. In a healthy bite, the upper teeth should slightly overlap the lower teeth. If the lower teeth are positioned too externally or the upper teeth are too internally, we speak of crossbite.

Crossbite can occur on one side (unilateral crossbite) or on both sides of the mouth (bilateral crossbite), and can involve the front or back teeth.

Crossbite can lead to a number of problems, such as:

  1. Facial asymmetry: Long-term crossbite can lead to asymmetrical facial growth, which can affect appearance.
  2. Bite disorders: crossbite can lead to uneven tooth wear, which can lead to other bite problems.
  3. Mandibular pain :An abnormal bite can lead to mandibular pain and temporomandibular joint problems.
  4. Problems with eating and speaking: Crossbite can make it difficult to chew food properly and affect speech.

Treatment of crossbite depends on the severity of the defect and the age of the patient. It may involve braces, specialized devices to correct the bite, and in some cases surgical intervention may be needed. The decision on treatment should be made by an experienced orthodontist after a thorough examination of the patient's bite
