Orthodontic treatment - what it consists of

Orthodontic treatment is a branch of dentistry that deals with the correction of malocclusion and tooth position. It is important not only for improving the aesthetics of the smile, but also for the health and proper functioning of the stomatognathic system. Keep reading and you will learn about orthodontic treatment and its benefits.

Why undergo orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment has many benefits for both the health and appearance of your smile. Here are some of the top reasons why you should opt for orthodontic treatment:

  1. Improved chewing function: A straight bite enables proper chewing and digestion of food, which is important for proper nutrition and maintaining healthy teeth and mouth.
  2. Prevention of dental problems: Malocclusion can lead to a variety of dental problems, such as gum disease, excessive wear on the teeth, or problems with the arthritic system. Orthodontic treatment helps avoid these problems.
  3. Improving smile aesthetics: An aesthetic smile is one of the basic desires of many people. Orthodontic treatment makes it possible to achieve a beautiful and harmonious smile by correcting the improper position of teeth.
  4. Increased self-confidence: Many people with malocclusion suffer from complexes and lack of self-confidence. With orthodontic treatment, you can regain your confidence and sense of attractiveness.

There are several different orthodontic treatment methods that can be used depending on the individual patient's needs. Here are some of the most popular methods:

  1. Traditional fixed braces: Fixed braces consist of metal brackets that are bonded to the teeth, and wires that are attached to the brackets. In classic braces, through rubber bands - ligatures that hold the orthodontic arch in position. Orthodontic arches (wires), have their shape memory, and by gradually stretching the wires and their return to the correct shape, the teeth are moved into the desired position, and the teeth are serialized.
  2. Orthodontic Overlays: Orthodontic overlays are clear plastic trays that are placed on the teeth. With precisely designed caps, the teeth gradually move to the desired position. The caps are only removed during eating and oral hygiene.
  3. Clear braces: Clear braces, such as clear ceramic brackets, work similarly to traditional fixed braces, but are less visible because they are similar in color to your teeth.
  4. Self-ligaturing braces: Self-ligaturing braces are a modern technology in which the brackets have special clasps, eliminating the need for rubber bands or wires for attachment.
  5. Lingual braces: Lingual braces are orthodontic appliances that are placed on the inside of the teeth, making them invisible from the outside.

At Stomo Clinic, we have decided to stay with one treatment method for adults and that is orthodontic trays.

When treating children, in addition to orthodontic overlays, we also use the D-Gainer treatment technique

Orthodontic treatment - step by step

Orthodontic treatment requires a proper process that involves several steps. Here are the basic steps in the orthodontic treatment process:

  1. Consultation with an orthodontist: The first step is to visit an orthodontist, who will conduct a thorough examination and evaluate the condition of the bite and suggest appropriate solutions.
  2. Diagnosis and treatment planning:

Based on the examination, the orthodontist will develop an individualized treatment plan, taking into account the correction of the bite and position of the teeth. In some cases, additional examinations, such as X-rays or plaster models, may be necessary.

  1. Discussion of the treatment plan
  2. The first stage of orthodontic treatment. Placing the orthodontic braces. When it comes to traditional fixed braces, the brackets are bonded to the teeth with a special adhesive. In the case of orthodontic trays, the patient is given a series of trays, which he or she independently puts on and changes every few weeks.
  3. Follow-up visits: wearing braces involves the need for follow-up visits to the orthodontist. They allow monitoring the progress of treatment, adjusting the braces and ensuring that the process is going well. Follow-up visits are held on an individual schedule for each patient.
  4. Adjusting the treatment plan according to the response of the skeletal system: During follow-up visits, the orthodontist can make adjustments to the treatment plan to correct previously planned steps in order to continue the bite correction and achieve an optimal result.

It is never too late for treatment ?

Orthodontic treatment is available to most people.

Before starting treatment, the orthodontist conducts a detailed assessment of the patient's mouth, bite and general health.

There are also some exclusions and limitations, such as not having enough healthy teeth or serious gum problems. Then, before orthodontic treatment, we implement a dental treatment plan, and after that, we can start orthodontic treatment.
