Orthodontic treatment without failure? Is it possible?

Orthodontic treatment without failure

Every patient hopes that orthodontic treatment will go smoothly in their case. Troubles do happen, however, and they mostly involve traditional fixed metal braces, which are now increasingly being replaced by modern methods. So let's find out what problems occur most often and what to do to avoid them.

What are the most common failures of braces?

As we mentioned, most often such problems occur with metal fixed braces, which are still the most common choice for patients. One of the cases is the detachment of the brackets, usually as a result of nibbling on hard food. "The culprit" here is primarily the adhesive on which the brackets are glued. Of course, it must be solid, but it also has to work together with the brackets and be able to be pulled off when the braces are removed. Therefore, it can be prone to crusting, especially when eating. If such a situation arises, you simply need to make an appointment with an orthodontist and not try to pull the bracket out yourself.

Another failure is displacement of the arch of the braces, or so-called wire. A common result of this is irritation of the mouth, which can lead to ulcers and soreness. In such a situation, too, it is best to make a re-visit and not wait until the situation worsens.

It also happens that the ligature, which is one of the colored rubber bands that are on the braces, breaks. They are changed during each visit, but it happens that the failure will occur earlier. If this happens, it is again a good idea to go to your orthodontist for an appointment.

Risk of failure lower, thanks to modern treatment methods

Proper handling and proper hygiene minimize the risk of camera failure. However, one should be aware that problems, either way, can occur. However, with modern treatment methods, the risk of their occurrence is lower.

An example is the Damon system without ligatures (this eliminates the risk of breakage). The lack of ligatures also makes it unnecessary to visit the dentist's office as often. This is because with traditional metal braces, follow-up visits are necessary on average every 4 weeks. By contrast, using the Damon system, these can be reduced to 8-10 weeks. It will also be associated with lower costs, as the average cost of inspection and replacement of rubber bands is about 200-250 zlotys. In this respect, therefore, ligature-free braces also provide greater savings.

Its advantage is also that the pressure on the teeth is constant during treatment, so the patient experiences less discomfort. The lack of ligatures also means easier oral hygiene, which is not insignificant to avoid additional treatments after the braces are removed.

All the risks mentioned above are also eliminated in the case of braces. This is a modern method of treatment, where the patient is provided with great comfort in treatment, also because such braces are removable. Of course, this should not be done too often, since the effectiveness of treatment is achieved when the overlays are worn 20-22 hours a day. However, if only the need arises, the braces can be removed for several minutes.
